The National Museum of Ghana was established on 5th March 1957 as part of efforts to develop a national cultural identity for the newly formed independent nation of Ghana. The very next day, 6th March was the official Independence Day which is still celebrated by millions of Ghanaians both at home and abroad. The date of establishment alone shows the importance of this national institution as it was formed as part of a broader movement to understand and preserve the cultural identity of all peoples that were now part of the new Ghana.

The main exhibition on display is of the museum’s permanent archeological collection. It contains objects of cultural and historical significance which depict indigenous Ghanaian practices and lifestyles. Among the items can be found beads, gold weights, traditional stools, pottery, examples traditional chieftains’ regalia, musical instruments among many other ethnographic artefacts. Some from around the African continent, acquired by the museum through exchanges.

The Museum also features a contemporary art wing, which hosts period exhibitions featuring contemporary artwork from various emerging and established Artists of Ghanaian, African and other origins.
