Foreword by A&C

Dear Esteemed Guests,

It is with immense pleasure and pride that I welcome you to the A&C Corner in East Legon, Accra, your new home for interior design, home furnishings and decor. At A&C, we’ve always strived to create an unparalleled shopping experience, one that transcends the boundaries of mere commerce and ventures into the realm of inspiration and enrichment.

As the managing director of this vibrant establishment, I am thrilled to be hosting you our beloved patrons at —The Mall Gallery— a place where art meets commerce, and creativity intertwines with convenience. We recognized that a shopping mall is not just a place to acquire goods; it is a space where individuals from diverse backgrounds converge, connect, and seek moments of wonder. Our commitment to this vision is what drove us to create a space where art and culture find a home within the heart of retail.

We also understand that the modern world moves at an accelerated pace, often leaving us little time to pause and appreciate the beauty and significance of life. The presence of art within our mall enhances the ambiance, creating a more inspiring and enjoyable environment of inspiration nourishing your soul amidst your busy shopping endeavors.

In serving you our cherished patrons, we also endeavor to serve and celebrate local talent and craftsmanship. Bringing together artists of different generations to showcase the continuity and preservation of indigenous cultural heritage. This is important because A&C is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a community of individuals, each with their unique stories and passions.

With that being said, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for sharing this moment with us. We invite you to embark on this journey of discovery with us. Our commitment to this vision is what drives us to fuse commerce and culture, recognizing that the two are not mutually exclusive but rather mutually enhancing.

As you enjoy the artworks curated by The Mall gallery at both A&C Corner and A&C mall let the colors, forms, and ideas inspire you, just as they have inspired us.

With warm regards,

Edmund Asamoah

Managing Director,

BORDERLESS EXHIBITION SERIES

1st October 2023 – 31st December 2023

A&C Corner in collaboration with Indelibl Arts are pleased to present the Borderless exhibition series. A monthly exhibition taking place from 1st October – December 31st 2023 at The Mall Gallery.

Art is a universal language that goes beyond geographical, language and national boundaries. This becomes important particularly for those who have a seemingly loose collection of cultures fragmented across national boundaries. This is true of the global black diaspora who historically are known to have a shared heritage but lack a cohesive cultural dialogue.

Through this exhibition we aim to piece together a mosaic of a singular yet global culture that has left invisible traces of one cultural identity throughout time no longer divided by distance and reimagined into a rich tapestry of storytelling. This is the story of an ancient culture in constant evolution against new worlds.

Comparing South African soul music with African American negro spirituals it is clear to see that this is an expression by the same people. The Rhythm and Poetry of traditional praise poetry found in Royal courts from South Africa all the way to Ghana showcases the connection to contemporary Rap and Hip-hop and the important role that orators have always held in our society. The Okyeame, The Imbongi and the rapper are cut from the same cloth.

This exhibition explores the ties of artistic expression across the global black diaspora in the forms of music, poetry, fashion, and visual art. This echoes the universality of this shared cultural identity while at the same time being an expression of singularity of African culture. As a people rooted in arts and culture regardless of where we may find ourselves, this visible singularity weaves both traditional and contemporary narratives into one cultural tapestry.
